At St Mary’s CE Primary School, Religious Education is a central part of our broad, balanced and distinctive curriculum. Rooted in our Christian vision and values, RE enables children to develop a deep understanding of Christianity alongside a range of religious and non-religious worldviews. Through their learning, pupils gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to explore questions of belief, meaning and purpose, while developing respect, empathy and understanding for people whose beliefs and experiences may differ from their own.
Children learn about beliefs, teachings, traditions and ways of living, and explore how these shape individuals, communities and societies both locally and globally. Through discussion, enquiry and reflection, they are encouraged to consider different perspectives, ask thoughtful questions and make informed responses to moral, spiritual and philosophical issues.
RE is enriched by the distinctive Christian character of our school and our close partnership with St Mary’s Church. Collective worship is a valued daily part of school life, providing opportunities for reflection, prayer and spiritual development. Members of the church team lead worship in school twice each week, children take part in weekly Prayer Space sessions, and pupils visit St Mary’s Church for Godzone sessions on a half-termly basis. These experiences help children understand Christianity as a lived faith and strengthen the connection between their learning, worship and the wider community.
We aim for every child to leave St Mary’s as a thoughtful, knowledgeable and compassionate individual who values diversity, respects the beliefs of others and is well prepared to contribute positively to modern society.
